Family Resources Newsletter – July 2025

Dear CDA Families,

Can you believe summer break is already winding down? As we get closer to the new school year, July is a great time to slowly begin the transition back into routines, learning, and school readiness. Getting enough sleep, creating consistent schedules, and talking about the new school year can help ease the transition for both children and parents.

Whether your child is starting school for the first time or moving up to a new grade, the back-to-school season can bring a mix of emotions: excitement, nervousness, and everything in between. This is completely normal. Every child is different, and they all benefit from support, structure, and encouragement as they prepare for the year ahead.

This month, we’re sharing back-to-school tips, helpful resources, and local events to help your family feel confident and ready.

Back-to-School Tips to Get Ready for School

1. Start School Routines Early:
Start moving bedtime and wake-up time a little earlier each day to help your child adjust gradually before school starts.

2. Visit the School:
Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings after dinner.

3. Talk About Feelings:
Ask your child how they feel about starting school. Listen and reassure them it’s normal to feel excited or nervous.

4. Practice Self-Help Skills:
Help your child get used to things like opening lunch containers, using the bathroom, or putting on their backpack.

5. Create a Morning Checklist:
Visual checklists with pictures can help kids remember their morning tasks and encourage independence.

6. Plan Lunches and Supplies Together:
Let your child help choose healthy snacks or pick out a new folder. Involving them builds excitement and ownership.

7. Practice Social Skills Through Play:
Whether it’s taking turns, using kind words, or asking for help, these skills are just as important as academic ones.

8. Stay in Touch with Teachers:
Once school starts, regular check-ins with teachers can help you know how your child is doing and where support might be needed.

Reading together is another great way to help children feel more confident and excited about the new school year. These stories support school readiness by helping kids understand routines, manage emotions, and feel more prepared.

Extra Supports for Children Who May Need Help

Some children may need extra help with learning, behavior, or development. Here are a few ways you can advocate for your child:

What You Can Do:

1. Talk with the Teacher:
Teachers are often the first to notice changes and can help track progress or challenges.

2. Request an Assessment:
Public schools are required to evaluate students for free if there’s a suspected learning or developmental delay. Ask the school counselor or administrator to begin this process.

3. Know Your Rights:
If eligible, your child may receive accommodations (a 504 Plan) or an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

4. Start Early:
Children ages birth to 5 can receive free developmental screening and early intervention services.
