Family Resources Newsletter – June 2025

Dear CDA Families,

Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year? June is a perfect time to pause, reflect, and think about how things are going for you and your family. Are there goals you set at the start of the year, like healthier routines, more family time, or learning something new that could use a little extra focus?

Mid-year is a great reminder that every day is a chance to reset. If you didn’t stick to a resolution or if life got busy, as it often does, that’s okay! It’s never too late to start fresh, adjust your goals, and keep moving forward. Small steps every day can lead to big changes over time.

This month, we’re sharing easy tips, a fun family activity, and free resources to help your family stay motivated, connected, and engaged as we head into summer!

Family Activity: Set or Reset a SMART Goal Together!

Try this easy activity as a family to set a SMART goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound):

1. Talk About It:
Ask, “What’s something we’d like to do together as a family this summer?”
Examples: Go for a walk 3 times a week, cook dinner together once a week, or spend 10 minutes reading together each day.)

2. Write It Down Using the SMART goal Formula:

  • Specific: What exactly do we want to do?
    Example: We want to go for a family walk three times a week.
  • Measurable: How will we know we did it?
    Example: We will mark it on the calendar each time we go.
  • Achievable: Is it something we can do together?
    Example: Yes! We can all go after dinner or on weekends.
  • Relevant: Why is this important to us?
    Example: We want to stay healthy, get fresh air, and spend time together.
  • Time-bound: When will we do it?
    Example: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings after dinner.

3. Post Your Family SMART Goals Somewhere Visible:
Put it on the fridge or where the family can see it as a reminder.

4. Celebrate Progress:
Every little effort counts. Here are some ideas to celebrate progress as a family:

  • Create a Celebration Jar:
    Write down small accomplishments on slips of paper and read them aloud at the end of the week.
  • Sticker Charts:
    Add a sticker each time your complete part of your goal. When the chart is full, celebrate with a fun family activity like a movie night or a trip to the park.
  • High-Five and Shout It Out:
    Give a high-five, a hug, or say something like, “I’m so proud of you for sticking with our family walk today!”
  • Special Treats:
    Celebrate with a healthy treat like a smoothie or a homemade dessert when you hit a milestone.
  • Mini Celebrations:
    Take a family “victory lap” around the house, dance to a favorite song, or just shout “We did it!”
Quick Tips for Mid-Year Motivation
  1. Reflect as a family: What’s going well? What can we improve together?
  2. Set one small, achievable goal.
  3. Make it fun: Use stickers, charts, or small rewards.
  4. Give yourself grace, remember, every step counts!
  5. Celebrate progress, not perfection.

Remember, it’s never too late to adjust your goals and keep moving forward! You’re doing great, and we’re here to support you.

Fun reading challenges, activities, and prizes for kids of all ages.

Free outdoor movies at parks across San Diego—bring snacks and a blanket!

3. Spreckels Organ Pavilion – Free Concerts

Free live music every Sunday at 2:00 PM in Balboa Park.

4. California State Parks – Free Day-Use Pass

Get a free vehicle day-use pass at your library for access to 200+ state parks.
Visit: parks.ca.gov


Healthy Summer Snack: Watermelon Pizza Snack

Ingredients:

  • 1 large slice of watermelon
  • Your favorite fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries)
  • Yogurt (optional)
  • Shredded coconut (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place the watermelon slice on a plate.
  2. Spread a thin layer of yogurt (if using).
  3. Let kids add berries and a sprinkle of coconut.
  4. Cut into wedges like a pizza and enjoy!

Join us for our Annual Resource Fair on Saturday, July 12th from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at our Kearny Mesa location.

We’ll have:

  • Free backpack and school supply distribution for the first 300 children in attendance
