Dear CDA Families,
I have always believed that reading is one of the most powerful ways to connect with our children. Whether it’s cuddling up together with a bedtime story or sharing a quiet moment flipping through a favorite book, these moments create memories that last long after the story ends.
March is Read Across America Month, a time to dedicate to encouraging a love of reading in children of all ages. Reading together not only helps build strong literacy skills and school success, but it also sparks imagination, builds confidence, and helps kids explore the world around them.
This month, we invite you to explore the joy of reading with your child. Whether it’s bedtime stories, family trips to the library, or reading a recipe together, every book read helps build a stronger foundation for learning.
Remember, reading with your child just a few minutes each day can make a big difference. Let’s work together to make reading a fun and meaningful part of your family’s routine, not just this month but all year long.
Simple Ways to Promote Reading as a Family
1. Create a Family Reading Challenge
Set a goal to read a certain number of books together or reading for 15 minutes each night. Celebrate with a small reward, like a movie night or a trip to the park.
2. Visit Your Local Library
Many libraries offer free storytimes, book giveaways, and fun literacy events during March. Check out your nearest branch at San Diego Public Library.
3. Let Your Child Take the Lead
Children are more excited to read when they get to pick their own books. Whether they choose comics, picture books, or books about dinosaurs, every type of reading counts.
4. Read Aloud Together
Reading out loud isn’t just for babies. Big kids enjoy being read to also. Take turns reading or act out different characters to make stories come to life.
5. Make Reading Part of Everyday Life
Reading isn’t just for bedtime. Read a recipe together while cooking, look at street signs on a walk, or read a menu at a restaurant. These little moments show kids that reading is everywhere.
6. Create a Special Reading Space
Set up a special reading corner at home with pillows, blankets, and books. Having a dedicated space encourages kids to curl up and read anytime.
7. Be a Reading Role Model
When kids see you reading, they’re more likely to want to read too. Share what you’re reading, whether it’s a novel, a magazine, or even a recipe.
Reading doesn’t have to be expensive. There are many free or low-cost resources to help families access books, literacy programs, and fun reading events. Together, let’s encourage everyday reading and inspire lifelong learners!
