Supporting Future Early Educators

The Charlene Tressler Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of Charlene Tressler, CDA’s founder and Co-Executive Director for 37 years, who passed away in March 2011. A passionate advocate for early childhood education at both local and statewide levels, Charlene dedicated her career to ensuring that all young children receive the highest quality care and learning experiences.

This scholarship continues her mission by supporting the next generation of early childhood educators in San Diego County.

Eligibility Requirements

One scholarship will be awarded. If you’ve received this scholarship before, you’re welcome to apply again! Past recipients will be evaluated alongside all other applicants.

Academic Status

  • Current college/university students, current community college students, adult re-entry students, OR individuals planning to attend (within 12 months) a public or private 4-year college/university or community college in San Diego County.
  • Applicants must be pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development (ages 0-5; does not include those studying K-12 education).

Academic Performance

  • Students currently enrolled in school must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale (GPAs are unweighted).

Career Goals

  • Applicants must have a career goal to work in San Diego County as a teacher or administrator with children ages 0-5 years.

Additional Requirements

  • Have a demonstrated financial need.
  • United States citizen or permanent resident.

  • Why are you pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development?
  • What are your professional goals in Early Childhood Education or Child Development?
  • If applicable, tell us about your experience as an early childhood teacher, teacher’s aide, support teacher, or administrator.
