Family Resources Newsletter – June 2024

Dear CDA Families,

As the school year comes to an end and summer begins, we are excited to share some tips and ideas to help you and your children make the most of the season. Whether you’re planning a vacation, enjoying outdoor activities, or exploring new hobbies, we want to ensure your summer is fun and safe.

Summer Activities and Safety for Kids

Summer is a great time for children to explore, learn, and have fun. However, it’s important to keep safety in mind to ensure that everyone enjoys a happy and healthy summer break. Here are some tips and activity ideas to help you plan a summer full of adventure and safety.

Stay Hydrated and Protect Against the Sun
  • Encourage your children to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when they are active or spending time outdoors.
  • Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to your children’s skin 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
  • Dress your children in lightweight, light-colored clothing, and provide hats and sunglasses to protect their eyes and skin from the sun.
  • It is never safe to leave young children in a car, even with open windows.
Supervise Water Activities
  • Never leave children unattended near water, whether it’s a pool, lake, beach, or even a backyard sprinkler.
  • Teach your children basic water safety rules, such as not running near the pool and avoiding diving in shallow areas.
  • Ensure that children who are not strong swimmers wear life jackets when near the water.
Practice Bicycle and Scooter Safety
  • Make sure your children wear helmets that fit properly whenever they ride bicycles, scooters, or skateboards.
  • Teach them to follow traffic rules, use hand signals, and stay alert for cars and pedestrians.
  • Inspect their equipment regularly to ensure it is in good working condition.
Create a Safe Play Environment
  • Check the temperature of the play equipment, especially under and around the surface equipment to avoid burns.
  • Inspect playgrounds and outdoor play equipment for safety hazards, such as sharp edges, loose bolts, or damaged parts.
  • Encourage your children to play on age-appropriate equipment and to avoid risky behaviors like climbing too high or using equipment in unintended ways.
  • Keep an eye on younger children to prevent accidents and ensure they are playing safely.
Engage in Creative and Educational Activities
  • Plan outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, or nature walks to help your children connect with nature and stay active.
  • Encourage creative activities like arts and crafts, gardening, or building projects to stimulate their minds and keep them engaged.
  • Visit local museums, libraries, or community centers for educational programs and events that are both fun and enriching.
Maintain a Routine
  • While summer is a time for relaxation, maintaining a routine can help provide structure and stability for your children.
  • Set regular times for meals, bedtime, and daily activities to ensure your children get enough rest and stay on track.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can help ensure that your children have a safe and enjoyable summer. Remember, the key to a great summer is balancing fun activities with safety precautions and staying engaged with your children’s interests.

We hope you find these tips and activity ideas helpful. Have a wonderful and safe summer!
